The Gospel of Mark is the second book of the New Testament and presents a clear and powerful record of the ministry of Jesus Christ. The book focuses heavily on the actions and works of Christ, showing Him as the Servant of God who came to minister to others.
The human author of this Gospel is John Mark (Acts 12:12, Acts 12:25). Early Christian testimony indicates that Mark recorded many of the events of Christ’s ministry as they were remembered and preached by the apostle Peter.
Mark’s Gospel is often considered the most fast-moving of the four Gospels. The word “straightway” appears frequently, emphasizing the immediacy and urgency of Christ’s ministry. Instead of lengthy teaching sections like those found in other Gospels, Mark focuses on miracles, healings, and actions, demonstrating the authority of Jesus.
Several key themes appear throughout the book:
Jesus Christ as the Servant of God
Mark presents Christ as one who came to serve and give His life for others. This theme is summarized in Mark 10:45.
Authority of Jesus Christ
Throughout the Gospel, Christ demonstrates authority over sickness, demons, sin, nature, and religious traditions.
The Kingdom of God
Christ repeatedly proclaims the coming of the kingdom of God and calls people to repentance and faith.
Opposition to Christ
As Christ’s ministry grows, so does opposition from the religious leaders, particularly the Pharisees and scribes.
The Gospel begins immediately with the public ministry of Jesus rather than His birth. Mark focuses on the beginning of the gospel message and the works of Christ among the people.
