Should a Christian Be Involved with Horoscopes, Reading the Stars, Earth, and Trees?
The world offers many practices that appear harmless on the surface but are, in reality, deeply rooted in spiritual deception. Among these are horoscopes, astrology, and the veneration of nature in ways that go beyond appreciating God’s creation. The question arises: Should a Christian engage in these things? The Word of God provides a clear answer—Christians must abstain from all forms of divination and practices that lead away from the truth of the Gospel.
Horoscopes and Astrology: A Deceptive Influence
Many people turn to horoscopes and astrology to seek guidance, believing that the stars and planetary alignments influence their lives. However, the Bible explicitly warns against seeking wisdom outside of God’s Word. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, the Lord forbids divination, observer of times, enchanters, and wizards, calling these practices an abomination. Astrology falls under this category as it attempts to foretell the future and determine personal destiny apart from God’s sovereignty.
The prophet Isaiah rebuked Babylon for trusting in astrology, declaring that their stargazers and monthly prognosticators would fail them (Isaiah 47:13-14). Instead of trusting in celestial bodies, Christians are called to trust in the living God, who created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
The Worship of Nature: Misplaced Devotion
God created the earth, trees, and all of nature to display His glory (Psalm 19:1), but He never intended for His creation to be worshiped or venerated. Romans 1:25 warns against those who “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.” Today, many elevate nature to an almost divine status, seeking spiritual connections through trees, the earth, and the cosmos rather than through Jesus Christ. This leads to idolatry, which is condemned throughout Scripture (Exodus 20:3-5).
The Dangers of Witchcraft
Witchcraft, like astrology and divination, is strictly forbidden in Scripture. Many modern forms of spirituality incorporate elements of witchcraft, including spell-casting, communicating with spirits, and manipulating forces through supernatural means. God’s Word is clear on this matter: “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” (Exodus 22:18). In Galatians 5:19-21, witchcraft is listed among the works of the flesh, warning that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Christians must reject all forms of sorcery and occult practices, recognizing that true power and wisdom come only from God.
Abstain from All Appearance of Evil
Even if some argue that horoscopes and nature reverence are harmless, Christians are commanded to abstain from all appearance of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). When believers engage in practices associated with the occult, New Age spirituality, or paganism, they compromise their testimony and open doors to spiritual deception. Satan often disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), making sinful practices seem appealing or innocent.
Seeking Wisdom from God Alone
Rather than seeking guidance from the stars, horoscopes, or nature, Christians are called to seek wisdom from the Lord. James 1:5 declares, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” God alone holds the future, and He directs the paths of those who trust in Him (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Conclusion
Christians must remain vigilant and discerning, avoiding practices that contradict God’s Word. Horoscopes, astrology, witchcraft, and the veneration of the earth are not innocent traditions but spiritual dangers that lead away from God’s truth. Believers are to set their affections on things above, not on the things of the earth (Colossians 3:2), and rely solely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Scripture. In all things, let us walk in the light of God’s truth and reject every form of deception, keeping our hearts and minds firmly rooted in Christ.
