The Book of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament and one of the four Gospels. It was written by Matthew, also known as Levi, who was a tax collector before being called by Jesus to be one of His twelve disciples. Matthew’s Gospel is distinct in its emphasis on Jesus as the King and Messiah of Israel, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies. Through his writing, Matthew connects the life and ministry of Jesus Christ to the promises made to Abraham and David, demonstrating that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.
Matthew’s role in the Gospels is significant because he provides a detailed account of Jesus’ genealogy, birth, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection. His Gospel is particularly focused on presenting Jesus as the promised King of the Jews, while also highlighting the inclusion of Gentiles in God’s redemptive plan. Matthew’s careful attention to Old Testament prophecy and his structured presentation of Jesus’ teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, make his Gospel a cornerstone for understanding the life and mission of Christ.
