The Gospel of John, written by the Apostle John, emphasizes Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Unlike the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), John focuses on the divinity of Christ, His eternal existence, and His role as the incarnate Word. This Gospel introduces key themes, such as light, life, and belief, and includes detailed accounts of Christ’s interactions and teachings that are pivotal for understanding His ministry and mission.
The structure of the Gospel of John is distinct and purposeful. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, presenting Jesus as the eternal Word of God, the Creator, and the Light of the world who became flesh to dwell among us. Chapters 2–12, often referred to as the “Book of Signs,” detail the miracles of Jesus, which reveal His divine authority and inspire belief. These chapters also record His public ministry and interactions with people from various walks of life. Chapters 13–17, known as the “Upper Room Discourse,” provide an intimate look at Jesus’ final teachings to His disciples before His arrest. Chapters 18–20 recount His passion, crucifixion, and resurrection, underscoring His role as the sacrificial Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. Finally, Chapter 21 serves as an epilogue, highlighting the restoration of Peter and the continued mission of Christ’s followers.
This unique division highlights the progression of Jesus’ ministry, from His introduction to the world, through His miraculous works and teachings, to the ultimate fulfillment of His mission to redeem humanity.
