This course provides a detailed study of the books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings, tracing the history of Israel from the closing days of King David’s reign through the division of the kingdom, the ministries of Elijah and Elisha, and ultimately the fall and captivity of both Israel and Judah.
Students will begin with Solomon’s accession to the throne, his request for wisdom, the building and dedication of the Temple, and the prosperity of Israel during his reign. The course also examines Solomon’s later departure from the LORD and the consequences that followed, including the division of the kingdom after his death.
As the study progresses, students will follow the histories of the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah, examining the reigns of their kings and the spiritual condition of the people. Special attention is given to the continual contrast between obedience and disobedience to the Word of the LORD and the consequences that followed each.
The course also explores the powerful ministries of Elijah and Elisha, including Elijah’s confrontation with Ahab and Jezebel, the contest with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, God’s dealings with Elijah, the calling of Elisha, and the many miracles and events surrounding Elisha’s ministry.
Throughout 1 & 2 Kings, students will see the faithfulness of God, the certainty of His Word, the danger of idolatry and compromise, the importance of godly leadership, and the consequences of a nation turning away from the LORD. The course concludes with the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel to Assyria and the eventual destruction of Jerusalem and captivity of Judah in Babylon.
Through lectures, Bible reading, study notes, and quizzes, students will develop a stronger understanding of this important period of Old Testament history and the spiritual lessons preserved for us in the Word of God.

11 Kings Chapters 1–5: Solomon’s Kingdom Established
First Kings chapters 1 through 5 record the transition of the kingdom from David to his son Solomon. David is now old, and Adonijah attempts to make himself king without David’s approval. Through the actions of Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba, David confirms that Solomon is to reign after him.
Following David’s death, Solomon’s kingdom is established. The LORD appears to Solomon and invites him to ask what God should give him. Rather than requesting riches or long life, Solomon asks for an understanding heart to judge the people. God is pleased with his request and gives him extraordinary wisdom along with riches and honour.
These chapters also describe the organization, prosperity, and peace of Solomon’s kingdom and conclude with preparations for the construction of the house of the LORD.

41 Kings Chapters 6–10: The Temple, the Glory of the LORD, and Solomon’s Wisdom
First Kings chapters 6 through 10 describe some of the greatest accomplishments and most prosperous years of Solomon’s reign. The central event is the building and dedication of the house of the LORD at Jerusalem.
Solomon constructs the temple according to careful measurements and fills it with furnishings prepared for the worship of God. When the ark of the covenant is brought into the temple, the glory of the LORD fills the house.
Solomon then leads Israel in prayer at the dedication of the temple. His prayer recognizes that even the magnificent building cannot contain God and asks the LORD to hear His people when they pray toward that place.
These chapters also record God’s second appearance to Solomon, Solomon’s many building projects, and the visit of the queen of Sheba. Solomon’s wisdom, riches, and fame become known throughout the surrounding nations.

71 Kings Chapters 11–15: Solomon’s Decline and the Divided Kingdom
First Kings chapters 11 through 15 record a major turning point in Israel’s history. Solomon, who had been blessed with extraordinary wisdom, riches, and honour, allows his heart to be turned away from the LORD through the influence of his many strange wives.
Because Solomon turns after other gods, the LORD declares that the kingdom will be divided. After Solomon’s death, his son Rehoboam rejects the counsel of the old men and responds harshly to the people. Ten tribes rebel against the house of David and make Jeroboam king, while Rehoboam continues to reign over Judah.
Jeroboam then establishes an alternative system of worship in the northern kingdom, including golden calves at Bethel and Dan. His actions become a pattern of sin repeatedly mentioned throughout the books of Kings.
These chapters demonstrate the serious consequences of turning away from God, rejecting wise counsel, changing God’s pattern of worship, and allowing sin to influence future generations.
